Is it ok to take Trazodone as needed for RLS?

My husband has restless leg syndrome and was prescribed Trazodone. The dose is take 1 or 2 at badtime As Needed. Now from my understanding Trazodone is an antidepressant. I always thought antidepressants were to be taken everyday, has to get in your system and you must not miss a dose. Is this ok?

I think maybe you should call and talk with a pharmacist and ask them what medicines are available for restless leg syndrome. I've heard of another medicine other than trazadone that is "specifically for RLS" I've seen it advertised in a tv commercial and the "actor" in the commercial talks about RLS. I think my sister is on it and will ask her and let you know. They gave her something about a month ago. I noticed when she was living with me that she always had her legs moving and after evening fell, she still couldn't relax them. I don't think she ever really noticed it until my nephew asked her why she always moved her legs when she was sitting still. She told him that she just couldn't relax them. She mentioned it to me and I told her that she should talk to her doctor about RLS.
I'll be in touch.

PS...I just caught her in an Instant Message and she said that she takes REQUIP and it works wonders for her!

I also have RLS and have taken Requip for over 2 years.  Before that I suffered with it for almost 5 years.  I also have to take Klonopin with the requip but I sleep well and no more kicking and no more needing to get up and walk around.  It was a drug that is commonly prescribed for Parkisons patients and they found that it works well for people who have RLS.  Please tell your husband to just ask his doctor for this drug and in two nights he will sleep like he hasn't in years!

Trazodone actually is quite the wonder drug.  I have used it off and on for years for sleeping problems.  I too have restless leg problems and general sleep problems.  Trazodone is not like other antidepressants.  It is not addictive.  You do not have to take it daily to enjoy the benefits you are talking about.  It is such a powerful sleep aid that many doctors will not prescribe it for depression because it really knocks you out.

The cool thing is that over time your body does not build up a tolerance to it.  It actually uses LESS until your body really doesn't need it anymore.  I think it is awesome!
