Is it really Tension Headaches? or could it be more serious?

by mj12, Sep 18, 2009 09:53AM
I have suffered with a chronic pressure feeling in the right side of my head for 15yrs, this always starts with ache  in my shoulder (same side)  which depending on its intensity determines the pressure feeling that I have in my head.  The frequency of these "tension headaches” has increased over the years to the point where it is taking over my life -  this pain/pressure feeling can last for weeks on end and leaves me feeling like I want to be sick, physically weak and  low in mood and unable to work or carry out activities for long periods of time.  I have been to my doctors throughout the years and been prescribed with a varioutly of medication, from standard pain killers, anti inflammatory tablets - beta blockers. -  I've also been to pain clinics and tried alternative medicines but have never ever been referred to have a CT or MRI scan, I  am worried that there may be a more serious underlying problem.  As I don’t believe tension can make some one feel so rotten,…some times I wish I could have a new head.

I also suffered from bellys palsy 4 months ago  on the same side that I have my headaches and question if this is a coincidence - I made a quick recovery from this but have recently started having a lot of eye twitching and dryness again

I really really don’t know what to do for the best -

Hi,
A nerve compression needs to be ruled out on the affected side( right side), on which you have headaches and shoulder pain. Please go for MRI of the neck and spine to rule out a nerve impingement. But I would also say that stress and tension headaches( if that is the cause in your case) do make a person feel very sick and depressed.  Please keep yourself free from stress, take adequate rest and lots of fluids. Take a diet rich in multivitamins, multiminerals, Omega 3  and calcium. A regular exercise helps to relieve the symptoms. Please consult a neurologist for diagnosis and treatment. Hope this helps you. Take care and regards!
