Thanks for your comment. I have a new appt. with a new Doctor... that specializes in sm .. It will keep everyone updated.. Thanks to everyone that has helped me..
Hi there. Syrinx or syringomyelia is a disorder in which a cyst is formed within the spinal cord, which elongates over time and destroys the centre of the spinal cord. this results in pain, weakness, stiffness, in the shoulders, back, arms or legs. One may also have headaches, loss of ability to feel extremes of hot or cold, esp. in hands. management includes surgery particularly if this is secondary to Chiari malformation, to create more space for the cerebellum at the base of skull and upper neck. Removal of tumor is recommended if this is the cause. Drainage of syrinx using a catheter, drainage tubes, and valves, particularly when hydrocephalus is involved. you need to consult a neurosurgeon immediately. Hope this helps. Take care.
I had no idea that there was different kinds of mri's...I am so glad I found you guys..Okay Im going to trip you up again. I can no longer have a mri because I had a spinal stimulator put in for the pain 6 months ago.. and I can no longer have a mri... I can only have cat scans now.. Can they detect what I need and what do I tell the dr. what I need.. Thank You again so much.. You have no idea how good it feels to be able to talk to someone that understands what im going through,... No one even knows or understands what is going on with me including my Drs.
Hi...it is very possible that ur syrinx is the result of ur injury...they can be slow to form...and for no reason grow rapidly.....this is when u would begin to notice symptoms as a result of it.
It would still be a good idea to rule out the chiari...request copies of old MRI's and all new ones u get so u have them for 2nd opinions and comparison.
It is also very possible that u did not have the syrinx when u had ur original MRI...so unless u had followup MRI's over the yrs they (the drs) would not know u had a syrinx.
Just know u r not alone having these issues..and we r here if u have ne more questions or just want to chat.....

I am glad Selma found you as well. It depends on what kind of MRI they did. If it was just spinal there is no way of knowing if you have Chiari. If the accident gave you Chiari (which is possible) it could be that the Chiari is just now giving you the syrinx. There are a lot of possibilities, and only a true SM/CM specialist can help.
I had a mri that showed the syrinx, they didnt say anything about chiari. I was on a moped when I was 15. I was hit from behind by a car going 55. Somehow my moped connected her her car and i rode for about 100 ft. I just remember that the next day I thought I was paralized because I couldn't move. I had a fracture in my back from the impact and the worse whiplash I could ever explain. I was 15 when that happened and Im 42 now. Seems like that is a long time. I cant really think of anything else. The dr. never really talked to me about the syrinx, so I dont know if I could have any of the other conditions
Hi...I am wondering if they told u how a syrinx could form....they r either from a CSF obstruction or an injury....
If u did not have an injury, the above poster Kim could be right that u could have chiari as well.....I invite u to join us and u will have to see a dr, but one that is well experienced with these conditions....

I suggest you visit the Chiari Malformation board, CM and Syringomyelia - or a Syrinx can be realted and you will find others with syrinx. I myself have Chiari, no SM. The first thing everyone will tell you is to see a specialist. They can provide you with a list of doctors in your area.
