Is surgery/anesthesia contraindicated in PN?

by Jen-Schiler, Apr 15, 1998 12:00AM
Hi!  I posted this question on 4/08/98 but got no response so I'm trying again, rephrasing the message subject.  I have had an acute single episode of PN and radiculomyleopathy (TM) this past November, from which I am now recovering fairly well.  I still have slight numbness, leg muscle stiffness, mild burning but walk OK.
Problem:  I also have an abdominal hernia, growing larger, but not painful, secondary to gastroplasty incision over 1 1/2 yrs. ago.  My neurologist does not want me to have any surgery, particularly with general anesthesia, because he says it could result in a relapse of neurological symptoms/paralysis again.  My surgeon says I can wait (for now), but will need the surgery within next few months.  I can understand that anesthesia affects the CNS, but what does the research show about odds of recurring PN or TM (transverse myelitis)?
