Is there a condition or disorder that can describe this?

Both my dad and I have a huge habit of picking at cuts and scabs. It's so gross and I can't understand why I do it... because I sit there thinking "I should be letting this heal" but my hand keeps going anyways. Mine usually happen with mosquito bites, and the doctor had told me I just had worse of an allergy to them than everyone else. My legs are covered in scars. When I was younger my parents scolded me for it but during the past year my dad has been doing it worse than me. I went into the doctor to get help with the scarring, and he told me there wasn't much he could do for that, but I need to stop picking! And he mentioned it's all neurological. My dad is an important member of our community and he's embarrassed to go out because abbrasions are all over his head and neck. Is it possible that this is some neurological disorder that got passed on to me? And is there anything I can do about it? It's awful being 16 and not able to wear shorts in the summer, or go to the beach with my friends. I need help.

I just read a paper in the medical journal about OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) or related problems with people who have bad habits that in fact are not good healthwise...this includes nail biting, eyelash pulling, hair pulling and a plethora of others and so I'd probably go see a medical doctor who could refer you to the right specialist. I was relieved to see this is an illness that either you must control those urges or get professional help.  P.S. I am not a doctor or nurse, just a curious person who has access to medical journals through a university library.
