Is this TIA or stroke?? Please help.

Dear Doctors:
I'm 40 years old, about 40 pounds overweight. I am hypertensive and am on medication. I'm on an exercise program as well. For the past 2 months or so, on and off, sometimes I find it difficult to speak. I also have TMJ. The words are clear, But I feel like I have to make an effort to say the words. Sometimes I get a funny feeling around my chin and lower part of my face. My tongue feels funny too. No other symptoms. My difficulty with speech comes and goes. Nobody has said anything to me. I have recorded my reading and seems fine to me. But I know that I have to make an effort to say the words. What could this be. Does TIA or stroke produce symptoms that come and go. Is this possible.
Now that I'm so conscious of my speech, that I tend to make more mistakes and correct them.

I appreciate all your help.

Thanks.

Dear Nmum:

Sorry your having problems.  I would doubt that your having strokes.  Strokes are usually larger events, although they can be small, but they do not wax and wane over such a long period with recovery of function so quickly.  TIAs are often described as very short events, and there is a remote possibility that what you describe are TIAs, but again the flavor of your events are too subtle.  I would suggest that you see a neurologist and get a good exam.  Medications can induce symptoms, as well as other diseases.  You may want to have some generalized lab work done, such as electrolytes, CBC, vitamin B12 and folate, etc.

Sorry, I am not much help. I do not think these are small strokes or TIAs.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD
