Is this plexopathy

by Char1938, Nov 03, 2008 11:06PM
I have been dx with diabetic neuropathy and plexopathy (emg) The pain in my legs and hips sometimes is really bad . Recently I had pain in my shoulder and swelling and pain in my hands , I thought I had arthritis , Went to a specialist and he said no . Its been almost 5 months and I still have pain in my index fingers and thumbs in both hands My thumbs and index fingers seem to have locked in place and is painful to move them . Had several bouts with my shoulder , pain when I move it .
Now my feet hurt terriable , Its like Im walking on rocks . Is this plexopathy symptoms in my hands and feet also  ?
My Dr. seems to know very little about plexopathy .
My father had atipical A L S varient but he outlived his dx so they changed it to diabetic amytropathy , lower motor  neuron , the dx changed all the time depending which Dr. you talked to . He live 20 years after his ALS dx but his symptoms were typical ALS , muscle weakness and wasting , falling , trouble swallowing, ect.
I take lyrica and darvocet for pain . I am 70 years old with lots of health problems . I have PAD and CAD (5 stents) and aortic bifemoral bipass . Guess Im lucky to just still be alive but I would like to know how to handle the pain
so I wont be a mean old lady .

Hi,

Thanks for writing in.
Plexopathy is a type of peripheral neuropathy. It can lead to pain in arms, hands, legs and feet depending on its location that is if it is a brachial plexopathy or a lumbo sacral one.
Unfortunately there is no defined treatment for plexopathy apart from pain killers and antidepressants like amitryptyline. Please discuss this with your treating doctor.
I would suggest you to consult a pain specialist if the pain is getting unbearable.
