Issue after Subdural Hemotoma Surgery

Issue after Subdural Hemotoma Surgery

My husband, age 50, had surgery in January for a Subdural Hemotoma.   Fluid was drained through two holes.    Fluid reaccumulated, & two weeks later headaches returned, so another surgery.  This time a Crainotomy.   Vessels were cauterized, & no more headaches, & CT scan was clear.    He is experiencing what they are calling "sensory seizures", & say they are due to damaged nerves during surgery.  He was told these nerves need to heal & regenerate.     These seizures are not bad, but just an occasional jerk, & lip numbness.   He has been taking prescription meds for these, & they help them. but make him extremely lethargic & unable to focus.    He can not stay awake for more than a 5-10 minutes,  & often says things that make no sense.    I do not feel like this is all the meds, but something more going on.   They did an EEG to determine there are still seizures, & have referred him to a sleep clinic.  The Nuerologost can't see him until July.    I will add that he was a smoker until the surgery in January, but hasn't smoked since then.

Is this normal after surgery for a Subdural Hemotoma?

Hi there. After the evacuation of chronic SDH, adequate patient hydration is needed to help reexpand the brain. The patient may be maintained on bedrest with the head of bed flat to aid brain reexpansion by increasing the intracranial venous pressure. Medical complications include seizures, pneumonia, empyema and other infections. Surgical complications includes fill the acute SDH formation, intraparenchymal hematoma, tension pneumoencephalus etc. after SDH surgery, even with the normalization of ICP a persistent space may exist between the brain and durra since brain may not expand to fill this space. Residual hematoma has been found in most postop cases. There may be a possibility of reoperation for reaccumulation of hematoma. Post operative seizures are reported and need prophylactic anticonvulsants.  Hope this helps. Take care.
