Just diagnosed with partial myoclonic epilepsy

by newdayrising824, Jan 16, 2008 05:09PM
Hello,

I'm 22 years old and female.  After 6 or so years of having myclonic jerks in my hands, jaw, and legs, I finally got a diagnosis today.  I started noticing these jerks in high school, mostly when I was typing on the computer or doing certain movements during cheerleading performances.  I didn't think much of it back then, but as I got a little older I finally decided to go to the doctor about it.  I went to a neurologist a year ago, and he said it was myoclonus caused by stress, but a year later, it was still worrying me, so I went back to him.  He did a CT scan and an EEG, but found nothing.  I decided to get a second opinion, and the second neurologist did a sleep deprived EEG where I also typed on my computer for some time trying to trigger the jerk.  Sure enough it happened, and he called me today to tell me that they are partial myoclonic seizures originating from the right central parietal area of my brain.  He said that now we need to do an MRI to try to figure out what is causing the seizures.

My question is...is there anyway to guess the likelihood of them being cuased by a brain tumor?  He said that since the CT scan was negative, and that the seizures haven't really increased over time, that it probably isn't that....but as I read online, a lot of times parietal lobe tumors oftne cause seizures.  I just didn't know what the likelihood would be for a tumor to cause myoclonic seizures since they are typically idiopathic.  I am hopefully goin got talk to him again tomorrow to schedule the MRI and get everything oging with that, but I'm so nervous I thought I would ask on here.  Thank you for any help.
