Juvenile Myoclonic epilepsy

by blueyz, Jan 12, 2008 11:49AM
I am 33 now and have only been diagnosed for about 7 years.  The epilepsy had been dormant until multiple surgeries....

Here is my question????  I was currently taking Zonegran until I had a hospital stay recently and they switched me to Keppra.  I know nothing of the drug and it seems to be fine w/o side effects yet, but could they be there and what about using during pregnancy and nursing?  We are planning...

Any experiences or advice would be great!

Thanks,

Blueyz!

Hi,

Keppra or livetiracetam is classified as a pregnancy category C drug.

This means that the drug has not been proven to be teratogenic in animal studies but human studies have not been done yet. The drug can be taken if the benefits outweigh the risks.

You need to follow up regularly with your doctor or neurologist and ask him/her about the medication and whether the dose needs to be altered in pregnancy or lactation.

Do let us know what your doctor advises.

Hope this helps.
Good luck.
