Killing nerves for back pain?

What are the possible side effects if a patient has chronic back pain and has been recommended to have the nerves killed in the back?

I think the biggest side effect is the loss of sensation in the area around where the nerves are.  If you're suffering from severe pain, this may be worth it to reduce your pain.

Best of luck!
