Kleine-Levine Syndrome

by RMR__0, May 04, 1998 12:00AM

I would like to find out more about this syndrome, its cause, symptoms, and
  its treatment.

Not sure how much help I can be with this rare disorder.  Kleine in 1925 and Levin in 1936 described an episodic disorder characterized by somnolence (sleeping) and overeating.  For days or weeks, the patients, usually adolescent boys sleep 18 hours per day awakening only long enough to eat.  The cause has been disputed. The increased eating suggests a problem with the hypothalamus but few studies have been helpful at proving this.Usually the disease is self limiting and disappears by early adult life. There are reports of use with valproic acid (anti seizure) medication. You may wish to contact a sleep centre in your area and they may be able to give you some updated information.
