Knock out cold

I am doing mixed martial arts for about 1 year and of course i took big shots to my face... I am very worried about getting knocked out cold , uncoscionus.. I NEED to know if my friend brain, will have permanent damages, i mean serious damages..i've heard you must take off from fighting 3-4 weeks for healing.. It will be dangerous a second black out after my brain healed? Or it will just heal as the first one? And also i know the body is very intelligent for example you fall on your arm and after the heal it will produce more bone density in that area to take more impacts. Will he develop something to resist to heavyer blows to the chin? Thank you so much for answer

The statement that "in emergency medicine a concussion is not very serious" is absurd and incorrect

A concussion is due to a blow on the head. The brain moves and actually displaces. In all concussions there is swelling. The swelling in turn impinges on blood flow, which in turn causes necrosis (death) of brain cells. In general there is a window-of-opportunity to administer drugs to reduce the swelling.

There can be damage without the presence of nausea or of unconsciousness. This damage may not show on an MRI.

The other possibility is a brain bleed from the blow. The blood must be drained within a short period of time. People have varying degrees of vulnerability Light sensitivity often signifies such a bleed.

In general the brain will not "heal", although there is recent evidence that the brain can sometimes grow new brain cells.

Decades ago I used to box, but in retrospect, it was plan stupid.

Any loss of consciousness is grounds for 24 hour observation at a hospital. The blood pressure is taken at frequent intervals. Abnormal chances in blood pressure signify brain swelling.

The statement concerning a "real concussion" is meaningless.

An RPG has what is called as shaped charge, which is designed to penetrate armor, and has little fragmentation.  The Russian RPG'S have a very directed explosive charge. An inverted cone is faced with a thin layer of copper which is melted and forced forward of the RPG in a thin jet of molten metal.. You don't experience nausea or vomit  from a nearby hit except in the comic books.

Every blow to the head has the potential to cause death.

The statement that "this is unlikely" is meaningless and unsubstantiated.

Sudden flexure of the head from as punch also flexes the cervical vertebra, and often results in what is called a subluxion injury, which starts to cause pain a year later and results in a lifetime of agony.

Damn.. The smartest thing in the whole body it's the most weak.. i don't really think if you are out 1 time you will be more vulnerable for a second blackout, if you give proper time after the first one to heal. I will tell a friend to knock me out just to overcome that fear im curious. When should i be worried? How i know i am in great danger after that? like having brain swell or bleeding?

Interesting question.

It is not good to be knocked out. When the brain gets hit very hard or knocked out you experience something called concussion. Usually you get either unconscious for a moment or you get confused, maybe get double vision, feel ill or vomit and became tired and get a headache.

In emergency medicine a concussion in itself is not very dangerous. But a hard hit to the head can also cause a bleeding in the brain which is extremely dangerous and often fatal. Most times you just get a concussion and no brain bleeding.

An extreme hit like from a car crash can cause the brain to swell and the pressure in the skull to increase which will lead to brain damage, maybe coma and possibly death. This is also unlikely.

Let us return to the concussions which is the most probable outcome of a hard hit to the head. It is not visible on any scans on not considered serious by the hard core medical community.  But I do need to tell you that lots of people experience long lasting symptoms like tiredness and migraines after suffering concussions. Think of a soldier who gets a RPG explosion near him and afterwards vomits and has severe headaches and states of confusion and these symptoms can last on and off for years. No ct scans or blood tests will show anything wrong but still, is he well?

Multiple concussions are considered dangerous. After four or five concussions you really would need to quit whatever you are doing or you will risk brain damage and dysfunction.

Even blows to the head that don't give you concussions, they are called sub concussions, are now considered unhealthy. They can sort of build up to a real concussion.

Does a concussion make your brain stronger like when you brake an arm? Unfortunately all research shows the opposite. For every concussion you get you are more vulnerable to get a new one. If you get many sub concussions you are more vulnerable to suffer a real concussion.

So to sum up, blows to the head and getting knocked out is not good for your brain. Your brain does not heal completely after a concussion and you are more likely to get another one.

These are the facts. Now it is up to you what to do with them. I understand from your question that you are worried about it and your worrying has substance. Still, most people who do martial arts do just fine.

I also want to add that running has a very positive effect on your brain and increases your cognitive functions, makes your brain heal better and gives you new brain cells. So if you want to do something to protect your brain running is the thing.

Take care!
