LOOKING FOR CLUES

by Dave__0__0, Nov 20, 1998 12:00AM

I posted the following in an on-line support group and have gotten some interesing responses, however I wish to hear from a professional on this matter.  I have an appointment with a Neurologist at University of Washington but have to wait several weeks to get in.
  ........................................................
After having been told by a Neurologist that I probably have Dystonia, I have done a considerable amount of research on the disorder (the Neuro provided no insight at all, since he is only my out-of-state provider), but I have not read too much about other, more peripheral, effects.
I am interested to know because I spent several weeks earlier this year seeing a gastroentologist for intenstinal problems, and after many unpleasant tests I was told I had "Irritable Bowel Syndrome". Which I understand means they don't understand why my stomach doesn't work like it should. Which sounds real familiar now. The intestinal problems persist and I am told to "live with it".
  ...Anything to do with Dystonia?
Also, though it is only suspected so far that I have dysphonia and writer's cramp, my legs do not "work" in the morning. Upon rising I almost always cannot straighten my legs or stand on them without assistance, and pain.
  ...Anything to do with Dystonia?
My eyelid *(usually only one) flickers like a butterfly's wings especially when I am tired. They have done this for years. ...Anything to do with Dystonia?
When I get home to Seattle, I hope to get into University of Washington for actually diagnosis and more information, but it could be months before I am seen (after the referrals, and approval of my HMO).
So I am looking for help here. And hoping someone can shed a little more light on this thing called Dystonia. I believe I will eventually be told I have general Dystonia. Could my other "problems" be the result?
  In advance,
  Thank you for your consideration,
  Dave Ericson
  Not sleepless, yet, in Seattle.
==================================================================
I have looked at your three questions independently  : regarding irritable
bowel, I have reviewed the literature back to 1966 on the Medline
database and have not found any reference to an association between these
disorders.
The eyelid fluttering sounds like it is more likely to be related
as eyelid fluttering and spasm can be a presentation of eyelid dystonia.
The episodes in the morning are more difficult to relate, I do not have
a clear picture of exactly what occurrs during and episode so cannot say
if it id likely to be related or not. The fact that pain is a prominent
part of the phenomenon makes this somewhat unlikely.
