Laminectomy and scar tissue.

Laminectomy and scar tissue.

Just a quick question regarding laminectomies scar tissue.  I had a successful operation in 1995 at I believe L4-L5, no fusion, just laminectomy.  Do you know the prevalence of scar tissue becoming a complication years after the fact?  Also, what are the treatment options for people experiencing nerve compression due to scar tissue/ prognosis?  I thank you very much for the service you provide, and thank you in advance for your answer.

Dear Jim,
The incidence of problems due to scar tissue after a routine laminectomy is low.  All patients develop scarring to some degree as a part of the normal healing process.  In some cases it causes further neurological impairment.  The problem with operations for compression from scar tissue is that the scarring simply returns.  There is a new compound on the market by the name of Adcon that is supposed to retard the formation of scar tissue after surgery, but our experience with it is limited as yet.
Speak to your surgeon about your particular situation and whether surgery is in your best interests at this point.
Good luck.
