Thanks for your input..... I will bring this up with my Neurologist..... I think Years ago he may have made mention of this drug.... I guess I thought that the tegretol would have a similar  problem as the depakote did....   I only remember the elevated liver enzyme problem and then my doctor taking him off depakote for the sleepy episode as if something bad was happening from the depakote..... and I thought Tegretol might be in a similar family with the liver complications.....    At the time we were also on Mellaril and Elavil too..... we have since restarted those 2 and then tried topamax....
It really seems to be a pill popping circus.    Several in the past have not been good...
like ritlin, ambiliphy, wellbuterin, buspuron,   just to mname a few....   I hope we can nail some of these treatments down.... I'd like to see if my kid can become more "Normal"
and acceptable to the outside world.   gracem

Hello.

I would like to mention that in some parts of the world, Carbamazepine is actually prescribed as the first choice. Depakote comes second. As I said earlier, Topamax is a great drug, but may not be suitable for him. Your situation is difficult. But please try to have a dialogue with the doctors about a possible trial of tegretol.

this is my question.... but my son is older now   12   and has already used Depaokte for several years until this sleepy episode.... they drew blood and then took him off.... I think he had elevated Liver Enzyme.... The Depakote would be the first drug of choice BUT  now would it be tegretol  or Topamax  as we have restarted topamax.....  and this Left temporal Frontal Lobe is where and partial is the type....  Staring and possible emotional outbursts... tears, Laughter, anger...     gracem

Hello.

Yes, Tegretol should be tried. It has two benefits as I earlier mentioned. It will help reduce anger as well as control seizures. It is important that the doctor is convinced about this change of medicine.

I am not a professional, just a parent who has been through nearly all the seizure drugs with our daughter.

Topomax isn't usually a first line drug. It is pretty powerful.

The next drug would depend on the type of seizure your son has. Some drugs can actually aggrivate some seizures.
