Leg Pain-need some ideas

by Tarasbulba, Jul 15, 2004 12:00AM
I am new to this and am hoping that someone might be able to give me some insight.  Ten years ago I had back surgery.(left side pain)  Partial disc removed.  My symptons disappeared.  For the past 2 years now I have had pain in my buttock, groin, hip, and down the side of my leg, all the way to my foot.None in the back of the leg. (Right side) What is different about this is there is no tingling or numbness, just excrutiating pain.  The pain comes on as soon as I stand and gets worse with walking.  The only relief I get is to sit down, or crouch.  Once the pain leaves I can again start walking but only for a few steps before it starts again. I have tried numerous Anti-inflamatories and pain pills. None of which worked.MY MRI shows Herniated discs in the lower back plus moderate spinal stenosis.  Because the pain is so different from my previous experience I question whether it is my back at all that is causing this.  I have had two series of Nerve Blocks neither of which worked.  Can anyone give me some ideas as to what else may be causing this kind of pain? Could this be SI joint problem, hip problem?  My doctor seems to have tunnel vision where my back is concerned.
Thanks

Given the description you have provided, it does appear to be a irritated nerve, most likely from a problem in your spine. To have this confirmed you could see a neurologist. They will perform a complete examination and ensure the it is a problem in the nerve. They may perform a EMG (muscle/nerve test) to also confirm the problem. If it is a problem in your spine, I would encourage you to have a consulation at an academic spine center. They will be able to evaluate your condition and make the appropriate medical or surgical recommendations. Good luck.

You've come to the right place, the Doc will be along soon. Cool name, you've got to be a little long in the tooth to remember Yul Brenner. BTW, you're describing classic moderate level stenosis.
Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane and good luck.

I am not long in the tooth.  I am 48 years old and too young to be feeling like this.  As far as Yul and "TarasBulba" that is my husbands favorite movie.  I'm glad you understand my symptons. It gave me a little more faith that maybe my doctor is on the right track.

Hi I am 37 years old and have severe back pain that radiates to my legs and through my hips and bum.I have a tethered cord with spina bifida.I had surgery 2 years ago and they did a partial release along with a fusion and a drainage of a sphyrinx amongst two hemi-cords.I am not sure why I feel so much pain.It just seems you are discribing my symptoms the only exception though is that I have the pins and needles.I am waiting to see a spine specialist(neuro)to figure out if he might be able to help me in someway. If I were you I would be getting a second opinion.I did and the second neuro is referring me to the third because the one that did my surgery didnt give me any other options except live with it, that I didnt take lightly. The only thing the surgery did was stop my urinary tract infections.I have learnt the hard way but I think it is very important to get a couple of opinions because what one doctor may noy see another will.I wish you luck and hope the doc answers you soon.Take care dmweez and the best of luck.

I dont have any answers for u sorry but i do have some of the same things u had said.I am a 27 yr old female with very bad lower back pain.It also causes pain in my left hip, bottom, left leg.My left leg is also 2 inches shorter due to the mus. pulling. It is hard to walk more than 5 minutes. Sit,lay or even get comfortable.I have problems sleeping. And is even worse in the mornings.Really stiff hard to stand straight.I have been to lots of doctors and have had every test done u can think of.But always different answers with different doctors. All i can say is not to give up i know the pain causes depression i'm n the same boat but never give up it can only get better. The best of luck.  CHARITY

I am 48 and also have very similar problems that have been desribed here on my left leg.  Unfortunately my mylogram showed the problem as being Arachnoiditis.  No cure only thing to do try to manage the pain.  Maybe the doctor can indicate what may be successful foe this painful disease.
