Lip, tongue, and eye lid twitching - plus slight slurred speech

Lip tongue and eye twitch plus slight speech impediment
About two weeks ago my tongue began to spasm or twitch. I also experienced the feel of a swollen tongue and began to have a slight speech impediment. After a week of this, my doctor took me off all medications. The twitching of my lip and the speech impediment both continued. At week two my lips began to twitch as well. A couple of days after that my left eye lid also began to twitch. I am going for an MRI in a couple of days to get to the bottom of things. I am also under a lot of stress. I have a stressful job (I work in law enforcement), and I am having marital issues. My belief is that stress is causing all of this? I never talk to anybody about life's pressures -- I tend to keep everything bottled in. My doctor on the other hand thinks it's neurological. Does anybody have any input or ideas as to what's going on?

Hi, Thank you for your question. Most of the times muscle twitching occurs without any underlying disorder & they are not harmful or may appear after anxiety or viral illness. But sometimes this muscle twitching appears as atrophy and weakness of muscle as well. Most likely cause of this twitching with weakness or atrophy of muscle can be when the nerve supplying to tongue, lid muscles is not functioning properly due to any neurological disorder. If you suffer continuous weakness and notice reduced strength of muscle bulk in leg, please arrange an appointment with a neurologist right away who will evaluate the possibilities here. Hope this information proves helpful to you. Take Care & Regards!!!

Could be either/or...but you need to follow up on it to make sure it's not neurological. I know that going through the gambit of testing isn't fun. In the meantime you could consider talking to him about using something like gabapentin to control the twitching (I dunno if it would help in your case, but I know it works for me. It works for the fibro too anyways).
