Lumbo-atrial shunt and chest pain

My daughter (34 months old), was recently shunted with a Lumbo-artial shunt.  When she gets really upset and cries she loses her breath and holds her chest.  When I ask her about the pain after the episode is over she tells me it hurts on her chest.  Is this something I should worry about?  I really don't want to bring it up to her Neurosurgeon unless it's absolutely necessary because we've only been home from the hospital for 3 weeks after a 5 and a half week admission.

The question is being answered today as I have sought some advice from one of my colleagues experienced in this issue

The symptoms you describe are not typical for lumbo-atrial shunt malfunction. I would expect more evidence for hydrocephalus (build up of fluid on the brain) such as headache, meningeal signs (such as neck stiffness or irritation, or decreased reponsiveness. The atrial portion of the shunt is more likely to cause a cardiac arrythmia if anything also

therefore the symptoms may not be related to the shunt at all, and may be a chest problem ie infection, although I cannot completely ruleout a shunt problem on this site. YOu should seek medical attention for this - don't be afraid to call your doctors about any concerns you might have

Good luck
