MRI Interpretation

by Tejon, Aug 15, 2008 08:47AM
I was hoping soemone could help me interpret an MRI.

Background is mild ankylosing spondylitis, which i have good understanding. But now dealing with disc issue, with not so clear understanding.  Not clear extent spondylitis contributed to problem. But naisd and pain-killers for spondylitis likley have been been masking issue.

MRI:
Right paracetnal disc protustion diameter. 1cm in tansverse 1mm anteriorposterior diameter. Irregular and anular tear showing proturdued disc material sitting in right subarticular recesses causing marked compession (narrowing) on right S1 nerve root as it traverses right subarticular recesses.  Right S2 nerve root also effected.

Thoughts?  Impressions?  Thank you.

Hello dear,
Annular Tears are the commonest cause of minor sciatica.Tears can be either radial or circumferential, and their natural history is that they usually spontaneously heal after 6 months. In a small proportion of people, the tears do not heal, and go on to become chronic. They cause inflammation and nerve root compression.

Treatment  of annular tears consists of a series of epidural steroid injections or a nerve root blocks. Chronic annular tears may be helped by Intra-discal Electro Thermal Annuloplasty
