by carol1106, Nov 07, 2007 05:39AM
I had mri done about a week ago for severe pain in my neck, under my left arm and chest.. Test results came back as Thoracic spine t7-t8 right paracentral broad base small disc protrusion with no spinal cord compression and right t8-t9 nerve root mild compression. t8-t9 right paracentral small base extrusion with mild to moderate to right ventral spinal cord compression and right t9 and possible t10 nerve compression.. Mild intravertebral disc age related change or desiccation..Cervical spine c5-c6 right paracentral disc extrusion with moderate ventral spinal flattening or compression multilevel neural foramen stenosis secondary to disc bony degenerative change.. Pain is mostly when I try to lay down or sleep.  Should I try pain PT or seek a orthopedic first..

Can I ask your age?

The pain under the arm and chest may be caused by the nerve irritation from T8-9 and T9-10 root compression. I am 57 years old and have had a similar T9-10 problem for years. When the pain flares up it radiates under my arms through the chest through the back in a circular type orbit.

You can go to an orthopedist or a spinal/back surgeon for a consult- would not be a bad idea. BRING YOUR MRI FILMS for he/she to read. Your results are from a radiologist viewing the films. Let the surgeon look, and they you what he/she thinks.

You probably will be put on an anti-inflammatory (naprosen, mobic, indicin) and told to come back in a few weeks. Physical therapy for thoracic disc problems will not help.

You should get better on your own in a couple of weeks.

Good Luck!

I was hurt at work about 6 months ago, pinned between a machine and a wall. I had immediate back pain and I had a MRI done and it shows a herniated disk on the T8-T9. It is killing me all the time. But I was told the surgery is way to risky as they would have to open my chest up and move ribs, lungs and heart to fix this and it may not even help. Is it normal to have pain around the ribs and numbness in my left arm and leg? I keep working out everyday to hope it will get better but it does not seem to be getting better at all. Is this just a part of my life now or can it get worse or better in time? Any information that is accurate would be great. thank you.
