MRI Results confussed Possible-MS DX

by flowerpeddle, Aug 16, 2005 12:00AM
One doctor DX me with possible MS.  I had another MRI and I do not understand.  I have had the last 7 years. Numbness in legs, pain in hips, thighs lower back. tingling in shoulders arms, can't handle heat anymore.  (I live on a lake bummer) My leggs are very weak and I can not stand long with out pain or they want to give out on me.  Muscle cramps out of this world.  I walk stiff at time because muscles won't relax.  My ankles hurt, shins hurt. I have been checked out by bone docs from one end to the other.( bone doc was the one who sent me to a neuro the first time.)  Vein docs. ETc.Those doc could not find anything.  These have come and gone over the years but now the pain in the knees, ankles, legs hips etc. And muscle weakness in arms and legs have stayed along with tingling and numbness and dizzyness.  Some days are worse than others but it is there.  I now have to use forearm crutches 70% of the time.  My GP is very concerned.  My last MRI says this " minor punctate subcortical white matter signal abnormalities in the convexity of the frontal lobes bilaterally.  Relates to nonspecific white matter gliosis and can be seen in patients with chronic small vesssel disease, head trauma or history of migraine headaches.  I have not had a stroke, headaches, migraines or head tramas.  I am 40 year old white female.  My GP still says my symptoms point to MS.  But MRI says different.  I am not understanding this at all.  Should I not worry with my next neuro appt since nothing was found.  So much money has been spent and nothing has been found.  Thanks you

I cannot give you a clinical diagnosis or review your scans over the internet, unfortunately

The MRI report findings are very common, especially as we get older and we get hardening of the arteries. Specific features of the white spots can suggest MS, but the report does not commment on these. To have just those sensory symptoms over the years and no clearer evidence of MS makes it unlikely that you have this disease. Other tests can be done to confirm or refute MS such as a spinal tap for spinal fluid analysis, and visual evoked potentials. There may be another cause for your symptoms - I do not know if your doctor has checked for instance your thyroid status, CK, vitamin B12 levels, stiff person antibodies, RPR. It may also be worth checking a cervical spine MRI to look for compressive lesions or myelopathy.

I also wanted to add that I have had blood work done and they come up normal (thank goodness).  So I guess I am tired of walking like a drunk at times and falling into walls etc.  Some of these symptoms or signs would go away for months and then come back again without warning.

Hi, I have had same symptoms for over a year and a half. I had a surgery and since the surgery i have been unable to walk with out a walker. I went to the mayo clinic in scottsdale and they thought it was MS, but after 10,000.00 dollars with all sorts of test showed nothing. They told me to wait six months to rn the same test again, but without insurance i don't know. What if again they tell me they cann't find anything. They cann't even gve me a diagnosis.

I have been experiencing the same symptoms as well.  It has been going on for at least four years.  It began after my daughter was born.  My symptoms would subside and Id give up pursuing the cause.  When they would reaccur I would again begin searching.  This last bout has lasted almost a year and is getting worse.  The pains have gone from shooting down the legs from the lower back and in the shoulders down the arms.  Now it seems the pain just stays in my extremities.  Some days its one or two others it is all four limbs.  Along with the pain is tingling in my fingers and toes and somewhat in my arms.  Blood work comes out normal, no bulging or herniated discs on MRI. I am at a loss.

Please, please check and make sure they have done a B12 blood test.  I lived with the diagnosis of MS for about 10 years until I went to a new Dr. who didn't think I had MS.  Turned out I had no B12 in system - takes 7 years to deplete the B12 stored in body.  Since then, I have bben getting monthly injections and will the rest of my life.  Small price to pay...

What do you do when you get treated for lymes disease for ten years and you dont get better, because they say you have chronic lyme and it will never go away. But then a nuroligist say its clearly Ms and is surprized that I am still walking because of my mri are so bad! 1 year later a new doctor tells me he doesNT see it as clearly as the other doctor, and doesnt think i have Ms! and he says its because of a head trauma I had 11 years ago and thats what is causing all my problems.. what do i do take medications for all three who is write I am tired of this.. do i just keep going to different doctors to give me a new diagnosis each time.. how do i find out what i have been suffering from!
