MRI how it works

I recently had an MRI done and I am curious by nature; why is there a series of loud noises throughout the testing, as I had to wear ear plugs.  Is it part of the procedure or just an
operational noise in the machine?

I believe it does no good to post your question as a comment ..... answers usually aren't given to comments. I too have tried many times to post .... just keep trying and at different times of the day .... luck will smile on you eventually. Stop and think folks ... the answers are given be professional people who have very little time for this. We should be greatful for the time they give rather than complaining.

Anyone have any tips on getting your question posted?  Every time I've tried, no matter what time of day, it always tells me that the limit has been reached....even shortly after midnight.  Am I missing something?

I think it would be better if they charged $15 per question.  That will weed out the "light" questions and save the doctors time (and increase donations for maintaining the site).

Maryjoy, I don't think that's fair - it's a valid question, and she has as much right to ask her question as you do yours.

Shame - this forum is provided to the public to answer medical question from some very ill people.  (See all the comments below.}  There are usually only two comments taken for a day, which makes it very difficult for some people to post their question.  Your question, which is not a medical one is taking time from the doctor and an opportunity to post from someone else.  I do hope the doctor doesn't use up his time to answer yours.

This is a normal part of the procedure. Different magnetic fields operate during the scan - the function of these differing magnetic fields is to acheive the correct signals from the body to be able to produce the MRI images in 3 dimensions. The noises are specifically made by the GRADIENT COILS, powerful magnetic fields that are 'ramped' up and down rapidly. The magnetic field is produced by electric currents in coils of superconducting material that shudders due to the high energy levels involved and the speed in which they are activated and deactivated in order to produce the images. The noises are completely safe and normal/expected, and are a necessary although sometimes uncomfortable part of the procedure
