MRI vs. MRA

My doc ordered an MRA of the brain but the facility won't do that unless I have an MRI first.  Is there a recognized medical necessity for this?

hi.
i am sure it depends what they are actually looking for. My understanding is mri shows tissue and nerves, where the mra is 'angiorgapgh' type picture of the vessels(large to mediium, it may not pick up the smallest ones so well) as the patient, they are the same that you just lay there, but maybe mri might want a small i.v. for contrast.
