MS? Birth Control?

by maygs, Aug 20, 2007 09:38PM
I've been back and forth to a neurologist for several months now. I'm having tingling in my hands at all times and the pain spreads from time to time to my arms (always lasting about a week or more). I've also had muscle weakness in my legs. I've had a MRI, a nerve conduction test, a ton of blood work  and all my tests came back relatively normal except for my B12. I started B12 injections and I felt better while I was taking the injections once a week, but now I'm taking them once a month and am back to the way I was before. My doctor is concerned that it might be MS even though the brain scan dosn't show any evidence but he also thinks it could be my birth control. He wants to me talk to my obgyn about getting off the pill and using something that doesn't release hormones. I feel a lot of stiffness when I try to walk after sitting or lying down for long periods of time.  Is it possible to have these effects because of my birth control and does this sound like it could be MS?

I forgot to mention that my muscle enzyme levels have been elevated and I am constantly tired (most of the time I have to get in the bed around 7 or 7:30 and I sleep until 6 am)

You need a muscle biopsy.  My friend had those symptoms and the biopsy was positive for myositis.  All her other tests were normal. MS doesn't cause inflammed muscles and I doubt the birth control would have anything to do with it.

If you live near Maryland, Johns Hopkins Hospital has a myositis center.  You can call them and send them your test results and history, and if they think you have myositis, they will arrange an appt.  You can google their address and phone number.
