Hello,
I'm new here and I hope I'm in the right forum. I am in need of help.
I have been suffering from maddening tinnitus for at least 7 years now, I am 40 years old. Nobody has been able to give me any hope or direction and I'm hoping someone here might have some suggestions on what the cause may be or what I can do about it. I have yet to find a doctor that will take my problem seriously enough to figure out what's going on.
Last fall I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, CFS, and Fibromyalgia. I take ArmourArmour thyroid thyroid for my hypo problem and it's a miracle drug for me. My CFS and Fibromyalgia symptoms have improved greatly since I started this drug too and although I can occasionally have a flare up they are far and few. I am careful not to be exposed to loud noises and I don't have excessive ear wax. I may have some mild TMJ. I only say this because a vocal coach mentioned it in the past as a challange I needed to work on. Headaches are extremely rare for me, and the only time I have had anything that might be TMJ pain was when I ate peanut M & Ms in the past, I no longer eat them. My dentist did mention I mildly grind my teeth when I sleep but said it's not serious. I always have a sore neck and shoulders, since I was a child, but it's been very mild especially since I quit work. I used to have a massage every week which was wonderful but did not relieve the problem. I don't get ear infections, have never had one, and I don't get swimmers ear (water in the ear) either. No vertigo, dizziness, or spinning. I am a little wobbly and have some balance problems if I try to stand on one foot with my eyes closed. I am not depressed in any way. I sleep 8 - 9 hours a night without problems. I have no other health issues. I am not a hypochondriac nor is it a psychiatric problem. The ringing is very real and I hear it all the time.
My tinnitus seems to be louder in the left ear than the right (most of the time) although it's on both sides. Earlier for many years I could hear my blood rush through my body whenever I tried to sleep on my side. It was so loud that I would sometimes wake me up. I no longer hear this sound although I sometimes hear a whooshing sound on the left side if I lay down on that side on top of the humming sound. Otherwise it's just like a constant ringing or humming on both sides which is hard to describe. The closest I can think of is the sound of a TV humming when it's not on the right channel, minus the static. It's the same note and can sometimes vary in volume. I have been dealing with this by always having some kind of background noise to listen too, it's easier than the tinnitus. I long to sit in a quiet room, in silence.
One more symptom that may be important. I have noticed that sometimes when I am in bed on my back, I hear a strange sound from the back of my neck. It sounds like air bubbles under water. This happens on both sides but especially on the left. I'd best describe it as an inner tube with a tiny leak under water. Nothing hurts, no other symptoms. I hear this for a bit and then it's gone. It seems to happen only when I'm laying down on my back. I don't know if it has any relation to the tinnitus. It scares me because I think I have a blockage and I'm going to have a stroke or something. Strokes are not in my family history but heart disease is. However, the heart disease has been with smokers, I don't and have never smoked. I don't have high cholesterol or high blood pressure. I am overweight but we believe that was due to the hypothyroid. Previously no matter how I changed my life I was unable to change my weight. I was loosing weight before I got pregnant.
By the way, I rarely drink wine (maybe holidays), and never now since I'm pregnant, and I have never taken illegal drugs in my life. I have taken Tylenol Advil and Aleve in the past for menstral cramping when it was bad, but since I started Armour I no longer experience hardly any cramping and have not taken any OTC pain reliever for years. I suffer no pain of any kind.
Please, if anyone out there could help me in any way I would truly appreciate it. I appreciate your time. Thank you in advance for reading my post and for any help you may provide.
