Maple Syrup

We have a janitor in our school (long time employee) that has just this year started to smell very strongly of maple syrup.  The smell is overwhelming in the room he is in and lingers after he is gone and even permeates the bus that he drives on a regular basis.  The kids in the school have started to call him pancake behind his back.  I have some medical background but cannot think of what would cause this.  Do you have any suggestions?  I would be more than willing to speak to him if I can find anything concrete.  Thank you!
