Medication change wanted for depression

by Debbie James, May 21, 2007 12:00AM
I taked effexor rx and want to switch to something else. The effexor has caused weight gain and hair loss. Do you have any suggestions on what would be a good substitute. Would topamax work better?
Thank you
Debbie

Debbie,

Topamax is not usually used as an anti-depressant it is an anti-epileptic used primarily for migranes.  You could use any of the SSRI's like prozac, zoloft, paxil or celexa.  Just remember that any agent will require at least 10 days to fully work.  Also, be sure that you are taking good care of your self physcially like a good diet and plenty of sleep.

Cheers!
