Meningitis Headaches - Is there an end to the pain?

My boyfriend was hospitalized for 10 days in Sept, 2011 with reactive meningitis.  He continues to have sever headaches and takes 12 to 15 Excedrin daily, but sometimes that doesn't help. How long will these headaches continue?  He is diabetic (type 1) and needs to work out to maintain his health, but he has been unable because of the pain.  He also isn't sleeping much. Will these long term symptoms ever subside, I don't think he can take this much longer?  He is also worried about the damage that taking this much aspirin and acetaminophen.  What can be done? Please help.  Thank you, Marlo
