Meralgia paresthetica after hysterectomy

Meralgia paresthetica after hysterectomy

I woke up from a hysterectomy with pelvic numbness and 9 weeks later had to have some corrective surgery and ovaries removed and awoke with my exterior left leg numb. My neuroligst told me in Decemeber I have MP, but I don't and never have wear tight clothes and I'm definatly not overweight and never have been, I also don't have a sugar problem. So, can you give me any information on how or why this happened? Can you or anyone give me some info on exterior pelvic numbness? My doctors including the surgeon have no idea about this.
Thanks,
kathy

Dear Kathy:

We often see this occur in females after pregnacy and delivery.  It can also happen in other surgeries when the legs are laterally placed for periods of time.  When you are under sedation for surgery, sometimes the legs gets laterally placed too far and can compress the nerve and induce this syndrome.  It should heal and you should be back to normal in a few months (since I can't examine you I am only guess on the length of time).

Sincerely,

Thank you for your reply, but it's been a year and neurologist says it will not get better since it hasn't in almost a year. I'm just trying to find some answers as to why is all. I can live iwth the tingling and itching, but the pain is what's hurting me. I've had to quit my job because I can't wear pants most of the time and standing and long amounts of walking irrate it.
Thanks,
Kathy

Dear Kathy:

You did not mention that it had been over a year, or I missed it (sorry).  I would agree with your neurologist and likely it will not get better on its own.  There are some medications that can help, talk to your neurologist.
