Metabolic disorder / MS

  Good MOrning.   My sister has MS and recently lumbar puncture
  revealed some enzyme deficiency - adenosyl something or other.
  ( new language for me ). and something about SAH was mentioned too.  Can you shed any light on this ?  APparently this
metabolic science is fairly new.  HELP !  Thank you. Elmo.

Dear Elmo:

It is difficult for me to tell you.  I not sure what was found.  SAH is usually an abbreviation for subarchnoid hemorrhage.  This is a bleed from an artery, usually aneurysm.  It can be fatal and needs to be followed very closely with a neurosurgeon.  Find out what the name of the enzyme is and I will answer the other question.

good evening
my five year old son has hypothroidism from birth. presently his medication is
thyroxine. today the doctors want to increase his medication because of hormonal increases yet his throid level is fine, also they want a bone xray to asses the maturity of his bones. any ideas ????????

Dear Ms. Doyle:

Sorry to hear about your son.  Alot depends on the etiology of your son's hypothyroid condition.  If his pituitary gland is dysfunctional then all the hormones produced by the pituitary gland would be absent, but since he is only on synthroid I doubt that he is panhypopituitary.  There are many reasons for a child to be delayed in bone growth.  Some children are slow in growth, and this could be genetic.  Some have a growth hormone deficiency.  There are many conditions that give delayed maturity.  What have your doctors indicated to be the reason?  To give synthroid in the face of adequate TSH levels would not be standard of care, so I would doubt your physicians are giving your son synthroid under these conditions.
