Mid-back pain?

Mid-back pain?

  Hello,
Could you please tell me if a lesion in the spinal column can cause severe
back pain, continually worsening (7th day). Absolutely the worst when
horizontal. Definite spasms around mid back and down.  Painful, Grabbing,
Tightening, lose breath. X-rays show nothing, no pain when bending over.
Seems to be deeper. continuing sensory symptoms, numbness, burning. Am
presently on 900mg QD Neurontin for past 30 days for sensory symptom
  control.
  Thank you for any input.

Dear Lucy,
There are a number of things that could cause such symptoms.  The most common would be a thoracic disc herniation.  This is similar to disc herniations in the lumbar or cervical spine, but the most common symptom is often pain.
Other things that could cause your problems include tumors, trauma and infections to name a few.  These are much lower on the list but should be considered in general in such situations.  It would be unwarranted to get more specific without knowing more.
Speak to your physician about your problems and see whether he will order an MRI to rule out any 'fixable' lesions that could cause your symptoms.
Good luck.
