  Dear Marjorie:
We have had to remove your MEDLINE posting due to copyright laws.  It is illegal to copy a Medline (or any other private document) and post the information openly on the Internet.  We have sent it via private e-mail to the CCF Neurology Department for their review and comment.  In the future, please reference a Medline article by it's Title, Date, Author, Affliation, etc., but do not copy the full article to an open forum on the Internet.
Following is an edited version of your posting:

Re CCF Neuro's reply to my query of Aug 18:

I did a MEDLINE search that turned up the following:
  J Pain Symptom Manage 1996 Sep;12(3):161-7
  NLM CIT. ID: 96396258 ABSTRACT:

Apparently this group is using IVL as a predictor of success with mexiletine. This seems in conflict with your
advice. Why would they feel this is necessary? In my experience, the oral drugs (anti-depressants,
anti-convulsants, etc.) are used on a trial and error basis--if it works great, if not, we'll try something else.

Marjorie,
We do not routinely run Medline or other literature searches for each question we answer on the forum, as the time necessary to do so is prohibitive. Thank you for the reference. I cannot comment any further on your question or provide you with any advice on the safety or advisability of the protocol you reference, as I am not familiar with it, although you are of course free to contact the physicians authoring the referenced article for their advice.
