More symptoms

by Stephie, May 30, 2001 12:00AM
I posted a question about a month ago, and I'm having new symptoms.  I would like your input.  I'm a 21 year old female, in relatively good health, I exercise moderately.  About 2 months ago, I was getting tension headaches.  I then started to get this pins and needles feeling in my face.  Went to the doctor, and she thought it was from my TMJ.  Within 2 days it spread to my arms, hands, legs, and feet.  Not a constant feeling, just a sporadic pins and needles feeling throughout my body.  It comes without notice and lasts for a few minutes at a time.  Also getting sporadic muscle twitches.  Went back to the doctor, and was sent for bloodwork and MRI of the brain.  All bloodwork came back normal.  MRI was also normal.  My doctor seemed to think it was anxiety or post viral infection.  I went to a neurologist who said he thought it was migraines.  I don't really believe that.  I do tend to be an anxious person.  I am terrified of MS or something worse.  It started to get better.  Was getting it less and less.  Then I started to get itching on my legs.  Mostly just in the thigh area.  I also had this about a year and a half ago.  It's an intense itch.  No rash, just itching.  Not an on the skin itch, feels very deep.  Scratching it doesn't make it go away.  I also went to the doctor for that, but they had no idea what it was.  It also went away.  It started to come back again about 2 weeks ago.  After, a very stressful weekend, I started to get the pins and needles feeling more often again.  This time, I was getting pain in my hands.  Mostly just my pinky finger.  It didn't last very long though.

My last question posted, you were sure that it was anxiety related.  Which eased my mind.  I'm still scared though.  Not really sure what else to do from here.  I also get pain on the side of my left leg, which I'm told is sciatic.  My questions for you are:  Does this still sound anxiety related if I'm not feeling nervous or overly anxious?  Are you still confindent that this is not MS or any other serious disease?  Do you think the itching is related?  Any suggestions on what else I should do?  I'm starting to feel helpless.  Do you think it can be post viral?  Do you think I need to have an MRI of the spine to rule out MS?  Is sciatic pain normal for someone my age?  Any suggestions at all that you can give me will be greatly appreciated.  I'm very scared.
Thank you again!!

Dear Stephie:

Sorry that your symptoms have returned.  I doubt that your symptoms are MS.  The brain MRI is negative which suggests that your symptoms are not MS related.  The generalized nature of your symptoms would suggest a spinal cord MS.  Your symptoms still sound anxiety related to me.  You really did not give me a history of having a viral illness preceding your symptoms, therefore I would have to say that this isn't post viral.  For someone of your age, sciatic pain is not common, but depending on your health status, weight, fitness, you would not be the first to have sciatic pain at a relatively young age.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD

This does sound like it is anxiety related.  The more you worry, the worse the symptoms are.  Try to relax, go for a walk or do something to take your mind off of it.  It does get better.  Good luck.
