What are the following tests used for, possible diagnoses?

ICD-9 356.9

SPEP, IFE, ACE, B6, HOMDOYSTEINE, METHLMALORIC ACID

I have recently, within a few months, had short term memory problems. I am 61y. o. female with DM II,  so I do not think Alzheimers is a posibility. Thank you.

Hi there. These are the various tests along with the purpose of ordering them.
SPEP or serum electrophoresis is a lab test that examines specific proteins in the blood called globulins. Blood serum is subjected to electrophoresis to separate serum protein components into 5 classes albumin, alpha 1 globulins, alpha 2 globulins, beta and gamma globulins.
Elevated homocysteine levels are associated with atherosclerosis, heart attacks, strokes, blood clot formation and alzheimer’s disease. Methyl malonic acid test is ordered alongwith homocysteine if there is Vitamin B12 deficiency on testing. If both MMA and homocysteine levels are raised and B12 decreased, mild B12 deciency may be present. If only homocysteine levels are raised it could be folate deficiency.
ACE is ordered in setting of granulomas, a chronic cough or shortness of breath, red watery eyes, joint pain that may be due to sarcoidosis.
B6 is vital in regulating mood disorders and most important in cause and treatment of depression.
I hope this answers to your queries. Your neurologist will be able to diagnose if you have Alzheimer’s disease. Take care.
