Muscle spasms

Dear Doc,

What is the definition of muscle spasms?  How are they different from muscle twitching?  I myself have muscle twitching, some twitches you can't see, some you can see, and some twitches actually make my thumb move, or my shoulder will sometimes jump or shake a little.  Can all of these symptoms be muscles twitches or are they spasms?  I've been to two neuro's, and they both think I have BFS.  I've had an emg done in May which came back normal, no mri taken.  One other question I have pertains to another symptom I have.  If I were to hold my arms straight out in front of me, my left arm (at the base/arm pit area) will seem to tremble/shake, but my right does not.  My left arm does NOT feel weaker than the right though.  Can this symptom be attributed to the BFS.  My left arm does have more sypmtoms than any other body area, but all areas of my body at some time have symptoms on and off. Thanks for your answer in advance.

I am 19 and for the past week, I've been having muscle spasms in my arms and legs.  I have had trouble releasing my grasp on things and I am constantly dizzy.  This morning I got out of bed only to fall to the floor, my entire body paralyzed.  I lay there for over an hour, not being able move.  Slowly I regained sensation in my arms, but I still cannot move or feel my legs.  My arms are sore, but I am not in a lot of pain.  What are these symptoms of and what should I do right now?

Dear Mav01:

Muscle fasciculations are what your describing.  They are muscle cotractions that involve muscle fibers.  A muscle spasms is a more violent contraction of the whole muscle that move a joint.  Likely the trembling may be a tremor but your fasciculations would not be causing them, unless you feel the fasciculations throughout your arm (unlikley but possible).

Sincerely,
