Muscular Atrophy

by ozlady, Sep 08, 2004 12:00AM
Since having a stroke 8 years ago I have been unable to strengthen the muscles on my affected side.  How can I do so?  I have tried weight bearing exercises, amino acid mixes specially formulated for me, vitamins, any sort of muscle building formulas.  To no avail.  Can you advise?  My stroke was a mid brain stroke, affecting the basal ganglia, but I have also been told that it was a brainstem stroke.   I was instantly put onto a statin after I was admitted to rehab, and I understand that this causes irreversible muscular atrophy.  It is too late to undo this damage, now, although I have stopped taking the statin.
This muscular atrophy is stopping me from recovering any sort of useful arm and hand function.

You may have permanent deficits from the stroke. Even with extensive therapy, many patients do not recover complete function. Statins can cause weakness, but once the medication is stopped the strength returns. Perhaps a consultation with a physcial medicine rehabilitation specialist on how to maximize your performance would be reasonable. Good luck.
