My 3 year old has Essential Myoclonus, need answers

My 3 year old daughter has been diagnosed with Essential Myoclonus.  We started the search for an answer over 2 years ago.  We've seen multiple doctors.  She has undergone extensive testing and deemed medically healthy, except for the jerks.  The jerking movement mainly happen when she is attempting to do something. (Fine motor).  It has gotten so bad that it is affecting her ability to function. She can harldly drink from a cup, or feed herself with a spoon because the jerks are so violent.  Doc put her on Klonipin (klonopin), but it has made the jerking WORSE.  As a parent, it is so hard to watch my little girl struggle like this, especially since there are no "real" answers.  Essential myoclonus means that they can not find/there is not a cause for it.  It just happens.  They can't tell me if it will get better.  They can't tell me that it won't get worse.  They want to try using Depakote next, but this concerns me due to things I have read about the medicine while researching it.  We are going to try acupuncture tomorrow.  It's not something her doctor recommended, but I have to keep trying.  Can anyone else relate to this?  Does anyone have chidren with this issue, or have had it yourself?   Anyone who can help with any info would be appreciated!

Hi there. I can understand your plight at the moment, watching your 3 year old struggling with myoclonus. Essential myoclonus is termed in the absence of other apparent problems in the brain or the nerves. It may have some inherited role and can go on stable over year without getting worse. Pathology is at the level of brain neurotransmitters, an imbalance between the ones that make receiving cells more sensitive and those that reduce.
Treatment is with medications like clonazepam, sodium valproate, levetiracetam and primidone and using them in combination may be synergistic, reducing the side effects of each and maximal effect due to different mechanism of action. You need to exercise patience through all this and encourage your child . Take care.
