My Son has just been diagnosed with ALS

My 47 year old son has a foot that is numb and when on it for a day is swollen.  He sometimes drags it.  He says it doesn't hurt.  His speech is also not like it should be and especially when he is tired I notice it the most.  He and his wife went to Houston to Baylor Medical Center and he was put thru a battery of tests and they told him he had ALS.  They are going other places to get a second oppinion.  We have no ALS in my family or my husbands family.  Is it possible that something else could be wrong?
