My nerves are shot .... need help

I have had problems with my nerves for years ......  due to nausea, sharp pains in my chest, indigestion, etc. my family doctor of many years ago put me in the hospital and ran every test possible to find out what my problem was; he found nothing physically wrong with me, therefore, said to chalk it up to nerves.  He put me on Valium which I took for years and did fine.  Several years ago I had to change doctors due to fact mine had a stroke and was forced to retire.  This doctor insisted I needed to get off of Valium. I did this over a year ago; however, this doctor has not prescribed anything that will help.  My nerves are so bad I jump when someone speaks and I don't know they are there; also I chew on my teeth (I have dentures) and this keep my gums sore; my hands shake and, in general, my insides are just jittery.  

Can anyone suggest anything I can do .... or a medication I can take other than Valium that will help me?
