Myasthenia Gravis and AIDS

by jacinth, Jul 10, 1998 12:00AM

20 yrs ago I had a thymectomy for Myasthenia Gravis .I was 13yrs old. Iam now symptom free and am able to live a normal life.
I am curious about the relatiosship of thymectomy to contracting diseases and in particular HIV. since both are related to the T-Cells.
I would also like to know what do you think is the possibility of me relapsing.

This is a very interesting question and one that we do not have an answer to. There has been some discussion in the past as to whether or not prepubescent individuals are at an increased risk of disease after thymectomy. When I discussed this with our MG expert I was told that nothing was ever proven. The number of patients with MG and HIV would be so small that statistically it would be hard to make a statement but we have never seen a link made. MG can relapse after thymectomy but at this point I feel your risk is very low. Good luck.
