Myathenia Gravis

by jennifer211, Aug 18, 2009 04:39PM
i was injected with botox and by the next day my eyes were slanting and i could not taste food.  within 1 week, my speech was garbled; my face lopsided.  i was injected in june.  my doctors have me on medication for myathenia gravis to stabalize my speech.  I was told by the neurologist that she is almost completely sure that my symptoms most likely were caused by the botox; however there is a chance i may still have myathenia gravis.  my question is:  can over injecting botox cause this disease?  the doctor says the botox should be out of my system within 4 months and we would go from there.  i had the injection on 6/11 and still have the same symptoms.

thank you.

Hi,
As your neurologist said , you could have Myasthenia gravis and it could have been aggravated by Botox because it affects people with muscle weakness more severely .The symptoms could be an adverse effect of Botox alone but the effect of Botox lasts for a maximum period of  6 months . A special blood test to detect the presence of immune molecules or acetylcholine receptor antibodies can be used to diagnose the disease . Most patients with myasthenia gravis have abnormally high  levels of these antibodies. But the antibodies may not be detected in patients with only ocular forms of the disease. Another test  called the edrophonium test may also be useful in diagnosis.
As mentioned earlier , the disease may be agravated by Botox but can never be caused by the injection . Please continue the treatment till the symptoms subside . Hope this helps you . Take care and regards !
