Mysterious syndrome

by Debra-L-Hacker, Aug 17, 1998 12:00AM

My health has been mysterioously deteriorating for about a year. The symptoms were: initial rushing sound in the ear, then heart pounding, sometimes beating irregularly,  blood pressure spiking, simultaneously with a terrible headache that hurt with each beat of my heart, then horrible cramping with my stomach followed by violent vomiting, this then followed by water filling my lungs and breathing struggles, often culmunating with a visit to the emergency ward for breating assistance. These episodes strike without warning, but most often in the night.  They last about 8 hours.  It has been diagnosed as panic-anxiety disorder ( I was taking up to 80mg of Paxil a day, along with Ativan), then vascularitis ( I am taking Sinutab around the clock for vasoconstriction), and now idiopathic pulmonary edema ( I am now equipped with an electric-powered inhalor, Reglan to calm my bowels and, if necessary, Compazine to stop the vomiting, and hopefully the pulmonary edema).  After each of these episodes I an exhausted for at least 60 hours and feel marginal for many days after this.  I have had to quit my job and quit homeschooling my children. Often I cannot drive or otherwise function in my household.  I am concerned about these aftermath effects also.  I am current weaning myself off of Paxil, taking the Sinutab, and Reglan. My stomach and intestines hurt most all the time. Any comments or ideas? Thanks.

Thanks for your question.  Your combination of symptoms are very complex
are it rather difficult to find a single/unifying explanation for all of
them.  It is specially worrisome that you have sudden pulmonary function
impairment that necessitates emergent care.  I recommend that you should be
evaluated at a major medical/academic center by an internist/pulmonologist.
Best of luck.
