NMS

by coptermech, Jul 05, 2009 12:38AM
I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge or experience with Neurological Malignant Syndrome or NMS?  From what I have been reading online it sounds like this may apply to me after complications of taking Geodon.  My doctors don't sedem to be able to figure anything out.  Thanks

Neuraleptic malignant syndrome is a rare adverse reaction to an antipsychotic while someone is taking it and has a high fever and can be fatal. That would be immediately noted and is not what you are talking about. What you described from your posts sounded like it could potentially be tardive dyskinesia (a long term movement disorder for more information google "Patient Education Tardive Dyskinesia"). The best thing to do is to see a neurologist who is a movement disorders specialist. If they diagnose it I could provide you with more information at that time to discuss with them as they are researching a variety of new treatments for it for me (in standard clinical research) and there are also a variety of medications in more standard usage that are helpful as well.

Thank you for the information.  From all of the symptoms that i read about NMS, the muscle rigidity is the only one affecting me.  I was curious about it.  I am looking into a neurologist, unfortunately there's not many of them where I live now.  I actually did get quite a bit of relief from my symptoms a day ago.  After sensing some type of movement in my head, all of th affected muscles relaxed for about 8 hours.  They are tense again today but not as bad as they have been.  That was a very strange sensation, feeling normal again!  So I am hoping now to see more relief and that this is not a permanent condition for me.  I will look into it, but i thought tardive dyskinesia was a condition where the muscles moved uncontrollably.  Thanks again!
