: I am two years post right hemisphere CVA I have a great deal of extraneous noise in my ears continuously.  I also have temporal lobe seizure disorder which is controlled by a combination of Lamictal and Dilantin.  Is there a conection between the seizure disorder and the noise? Is there anything I can do about it?

Dear Deborah:
The cause of the extraneous noises that you hear is not clear. While these can be a manifestation of seizures, this is not very common. Normal persons can hear pulsations in their ears, especially in bed when it is quiet; your problem appears different, however.
If symptoms are sufficiently bothersome, seeing a neurologist may help. Also, I do not know if you have had a complete evaluation for your stroke, and whether you are on optimal treatment for the problem.
In case you live near Cleveland and desire another opinion, I recommend that you see one of the stroke neurologists here. You may want to see Dr. Anthony Furlan, Dr. Cathy Sila, or Dr. Judith Hinchey. The numbers to call for appointment are (216)444-5559, or (800)223-2273 (toll free).
I wish you the best of luck.
