My 81 y.o.Dad is being work up for nph after a mri showing enlarged venticles. The test results from the cisternography  are not  back yet ! How safe and effective  is having a vp shunt placed at that age????He is only on meds for htn  and cholestrol  which are both well controlled!

Hi,

If the general health of your father is good and his BP is well controlled then age will not be a factor for success of the surgery.
The overall prognosis for surgery is good although post op recovery may be slow and he may need antibiotics and pain killers.

Good luck.
