Need a little help...Please

  To whom it may concern:
I have a friend that needs a Thymectomy done...  We live in a community that is not very aware of this disorder.   The nearest large towns around here are Las Cruses NM and El Paso, TX.  My question is can anyone tell me..or send me a list of doctors that have prerformed this surgery before....
  Thank you very much.....

I don't know about the doctors in Las Cruces, but obviously El Paso is a much larger town, and they have a hospital affiliated with Texas Tech medical school. You probably already know that you need a thoracic surgeon (the thymus is under the breastbone). My inclination would be to seek out the medical school in El Paso, or perhaps go up to Albuquerque - I believe UNM has a medical school and would guess they have a medical center hospital.
If you want to go to a really large place, think of Denver or Dallas. Both have major university medical centers, and I know thymectomies are done in Dallas at UT Southwestern Medical Center. I haven't been to Denver in years, but if you know anyone there you could look into your options.
I assume the thymectomy is being done for myasthenia gravis. Clearly, you have seen a neurologist. Be sure you are confident of the diagnosis before you subject yourself to surgery. A second opinion shouldn't offend the doctor you are working with, and often the second opinion agrees with the first: it usually builds your confidence in knowing that the right plan is underway.
I hope this helps. CCF MD mdf.
