: yes, it was the overnight study with electrodes all over, then I also had to stay all the next day and try to nap every hour.
: Maybe I not understanding something.  You have been told that you do not get enough REM sleep, yet the sleep physician says that your sleep study is normal.  What type of sleep study did you have?  Was it the type that you slept overnight and had electrode leads placed on you head and face?  I think that you may be fighting two problems, one is the daily fatigue with excessive daytime sleepiness and the other problem may be you sleep.  I think that a second opinion from a sleep expert might help things out. Excessive daytime sleepiness can result from a number of problems and I think revisiting these possibilities might uncover the reason for your fatigue.  Let us know if we can help.  We have some of the best sleep experts in the country.  You can call 1-800-CCF-CARE.  There are also good places at Stanford, Boston, UCLA, etc.  Best of luck.

Dear Robk:
If your sleep study was normal and you cycled through 4-6 times, with adequate REM and progression through the stages of sleep in the appropriate manner then how can your physician say that you do not have enough REM sleep?  That doesn't make sense.  Daytime sleepiness, with constant fatigue would almost always give one an abnormal sleep study test.  I think that I would gather all the information and seek a second opinion.  Maybe new eyes with a different perspective might clear the air and give you some relief.  Best of luck.
Sincerely,
CCF Neuro[P] MD
