Needle sensation in arms

Needle sensation in arms

I had a C5-C6 disectomy and fusion on May 18, 2011. I was doing really well until 1 1/2 weeks ago when I started getting needle poking down my arms, moreso the right side, leading into my ring and pinky fingers. I get pains down my spine to midback area(starting at lower neck). Any help out there?

Thanks for using the forum. I am happy to address your questions, and my answer will be based on the information you provided here. Please make sure you recognize that this forum is for educational purposes only, and it does not substitute for a formal office visit with a doctor.

Without the ability to examine and obtain a history, I can not tell you what the exact cause of the symptoms is. However I will try to provide you with some useful information.

Depending on the location of the pain/sensory changes in the arm, it may be related to the level of the discectomy. Pain postoperatively may be the result of inflammation, scarring, muscle spasm, psychosocial, or inadequate removal of herniated disc.

You should discuss your symptoms with your surgeon. Depending on the examination, he/she may wish to evaluate your back with an MRI. You should also ask if you are a candidate for physical therapy and neuropathic pain medications, such as gabapentin or pregabalin.

Thank you for this opportunity to answer your questions, I hope you find the information I have provided useful, good luck.
