Nerve Block For Hand

Nerve Block For Hand

I've had continual nerve pain in my hand for 3 months following shoulder surgery. I even have a swelled up lump at the thumb  joint near the wrist. My dr. is now suggesting a nerve block for my hand since other treatment methods have not helped. I'm wondering if a hand nerve block near the the base of my thumb will give me numbness to the point that I won't be able to grasp or pick up things? Also how long does the nerve block last usually?

The potential side effects and duration of benefit depend upon which nerves your doctor is planning to block and which agents are going to be injected. You need to ask your doctor what risks are involved, and what is their experience with these procedures. If they are injecting the sensory nerve only in your thumb, then motor function should not be affected, but your perception of holding a item may be altered. If you have not seen a neurologist, I would recommend it (to exclude any other possibilities. Good luck
